Favorite Fight of All Time:Leonard-Hearns I. Two all time greats in their primes battling it out in a back and forth battle and Leonard made the fight come down to the one variable that was in his favor; his chin.
Most Memorable Fights Seen Live:
I’ve been fortunate to attend fight cards before the age of the internet boom. I attended Bowe-Holyfield in November of 1992, Humberto Gonzalez’s final fight at the forum against Samon Sorjaturong, which was KO Magazine’s 1995 fight of the year as well as Morales-Barrera I and Barrera’s war against Kennedy McKinney, which is in my opinion is still the greatest fight I have ever seen live. Terry Norris-Meldrick Taylor was also special because after the bout I hurdled a bunch of seats and got into the Ring and my friends in High-school saw me on HBO when Larry Merchant interviewed Mills Lane.
Favorite all Time Fighters:
Muhammad Ali: When Holyfield fought Foreman I started really getting into boxing and watched Champions Forever and then about a year later I read Thomas Hauser’s biography on the great one. In fact after watching some video of Ali one night I tried to talk to an opponent during a wrestling match and my coach took me to the side and slapped me upside the head and said there was only one Ali. I was a young stupid kid who was very impressionable. To this day I still consider Ali the greatest heavyweight of all time. I also like Sugar Ray Leonard because he was the miracle man and fought and beat everyone. Roberto Duran, James Toney, Roy Jones, Felix Trinidad, Terry Norris, Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield, Marco Antonio Barrera, Michael Spinks, and Bob Foster.
Favorite Current Fighters:
Chris Arreola, Paul Williams, Floyd Mayweather and Kelly Pavlik are probably my favorite fighters today. I really think Paul Williams is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. I hate watching Bernard Hopkins.
Favorite Movies:
True Romance, Jaws, Ghost, anything Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, Shawshank Redemption, Terminator I, Amores Perros and the Kite Runner are a few of my favorites.
Favorite Books:
I read this series based on a rogue under the radar for hire fix-it guy called Repair Man Jack. He’s like Mac Gyver, Snake Eyes, Reese from the Terminator, and Bruce Willis in Die Hard rolled into one bad ass Mo-Fo.
Boxing Bio:
I got into boxing in the early 1990’s and became friends with Ring talk’s Pedro Fernandez and he sent me to some fights at the Forum and Bobby Czyz-Donny Lalonde. Then in February of 1999 I wrote for Ring talk for a short stint, but I submitted an article about how American Presents was spending too much money signing mediocre fighters and the company was one of his sponsors and that effectively ended our working relationship. Then in the fall of 2004 I started writing for Rick Reeno’s BoxingScene.com and was with them until recently. I’ve also been the Spanish language Correspondent for Ring Magazine since 2005 and did extensive pieces on Erik Morales,Marco Barrera, the Marquez brothers, and Israel Vasquez. In 2006 I went down to Panama to cover Edwin Valero’s fight with Mosquera. I’ve also been on the ESPN Classic Show Who’s Number One.
Personal Comments:
I’m a gringo and lived in Costa Rica for a couple of years and learned Spanish. I had studied it in school for years, but I didn’t start speaking it until I started going out partying in San Jose talking to people every night. If you want to learn a language take some classes in the day and then afterward practice and go party at night.
I went to UCLA and I loved it. I really liked the people and the intellectual conversations I regularly had with people. If I was a multi-millionaire I would be doing a PHD in history for the pleasure of it. After boxing, UCLA basketball is the only sport I follow closely. I’m not one of these guys that fell into boxing after not being able to break into one of the other major sports.
